Old Yeller Project

We have just finished reading "Old Yeller"-- and your student has chosen a project to complete. See below for the list of projects with their requirements. Each project must be a minimum of one page typed (double-spaced) or hand written.

Projects are due Friday May 17th, but students are encouraged to turn them in before then.

Topics for Research and Writing Projects- Old Yeller
1.     Do some research about daily life in rural Texas in the 1860s. Imagine you lived then instead of now and describe what your day would be like. What aspects of life in the 1860s do you think you would like? What wouldn’t you like? What would you find hardest about living in the frontier days?

2.   Continue this story where it leaves off. Describe what you think happens when Travis takes Little Arliss and the pup on a squirrel hunt.

3.    Travis’s mother plays an important role in this story—she runs the house while Travis’s father is away and she is there to help out Travis every time he runs into trouble. Research the role of women in the 1860s. How do women’s roles today compare with the role of women then? Do you think women had it easier or harder then than now?

4.    Pick five scenes in the novel that you found particularly interesting or exciting and draw a picture of them. Write a paragraph for each illustration explaining what is happening and why you feel it is an important scene in the book.

5.   Travis spends some time in this story thinking about what it means to be a man. Write an essay about what you think it means to be a grown up. Are your criteria for becoming an adult different than Travis’s? How? How much do you think a person’s age has to do with being able to take on responsibility? What about the effect of the time and place in which a person lives?

6.   Write a short story about an adventure you’ve had with an animal that you loved. How did the adventure make you feel closer to your animal friend?

Science Fair

Dear Parents,

Your child has the opportunity to enter our grade science fair this year.  There are three types of project processes your child can do for a science fair project for the school science fair.
1) The Scientific Method process
2) The Engineering Design process
3) The Computer Design process

Jordan School District has put together a student packet for each process listed above for you child to follow for his/her science fair project.  These student packets are found on the Jordan School District website.  Follow the directions below to find these packets.
1.     Go to www.jordandistrict.org.
2.     Under “Faculty and Staff”, hit “Departments”.
3.     Click on “Science (Elementary)”.
4.     On the right side click on the student packet your child wants to do or review.
5.     When you click on it, it will automatically download it onto your desktop.

At this time scroll down and click on Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair (CUSEF) Registration Form-–English or Spanish to download it. Many think that this form is just for those entering the Jordan School District Science Fair and the Regional Fair at BYU.  This is not so.

The CUSEF Registration Form is for our grade science fair also. When your child fills it out he/she will see all the rules and guidelines that must be followed when doing a science fair project so it won’t be disqualified.  Below is what is found on each page.
Page one:        Student Information; Project Information.
Page two:        Science Fair and Project Rules. If the student is doing any of these projects, he/she will need to acquire professional signatures to make sure the project is done in a safe manner. There are no exceptions.
Page three:       Science Fair Project and Research Plan. The student needs to write up the science fair plan he/she will follow in doing the science fair project. This is for his/her teacher to review.
Page four:        Display Safety Rules; Student and Parent Signatures.

When the form is complete, your child will give it to me to review.  If everything is complete, I will sign it knowing that it will be a safe project. The registration form will be kept by me.  Once the registration form is complete and handed in, your child can begin with the science fair project using one of the project processes.

More information will follow about our grade science fair. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank you,

Mrs. Wilson

Thank You!

Thank you to all who donated fleece for our Annual Service Project!! We finished tying the blankets this past week and had a special visit from the ladies who will be delivering them. We enjoyed hearing about the importance of our country's flag and about those who are fighting to keep our country free. We will not be having a formal "Christmas" or "Holiday" party-- as we wanted to focus more on giving than receiving this year. We will still have our monthly fifth grade party for those students who do not have any missing work from the month of December. That party will be this Friday afternoon from 12:30-1:15pm. Please check skyward and make sure your students have all their assignments in by Thursday afternoon.

Thank you again for your continued support! As always-- feel free to call or email with questions or concerns.

Colonial Days & Annual Service Project

Colonial Days
We are celebrating Colonial Days on the 20th and would like to have pie and ice cream from the class. Please send a $2.00 donation by November 16th to make this possible. Thank you!!

Annual Christmas Service Project
It is almost that time of year again.  It is our annual class tradition to make fleece blankets and donate them to a charity.  This year we will be donating our hand-tied fleece blankets to the Veteran’s Hospital.  We will have special visitors come and share personal stories of serving in the military and a mother of a fallen soldier will share her story.  She will take our blankets and deliver them on Christmas morning to the Veteran’s Hospital.  This is a very powerful service project and one that we hope shares the spirit of being an American.
We are asking that each child donate 2 yards of fleece (any style and color).  Please have the edges cut smoothly; that will help me out.  We need the fleece here by Friday, December 7.  We will work on the blankets the week of the 10th and give them away on Friday, December 14.
         Thank you for supporting us!
