Presidential Election 2012

Because fifth grade is a time we learn about United States History and how the government works, on election night (tonight) your student will need to fill out an Electoral College paper to see who the votes went to. Please have it filled out by Wednesday morning so that we can discuss the results as a class.

To fill out the map, please use a red and blue colored crayon or colored pencil and color in a state by what color the electoral votes went to. RED for Mitt Romney and BLUE for Barack Obama.

If your student forgot their map at school-- you can print out another map for them to color.

Parent-Teacher Conference!

This year sure seems to be flying by! I can't believe it's already time for Parent-Teacher Conferences! To schedule an appointment-- use the Online Scheduler which can be found on our schools website: http://schools.jordandistrict.org/elkmeadows/ --then select the Online Scheduler icon/link.
Choose "Elk Meadows Elementary" from the drop down list and click "go".
Enter our school's password: "Falcons"
Enter your student's "Student ID". If you do not know the Student ID, use the LOOK UP STUDENT ID button to access the system.
Verify the student's birth date
Check the box next to the name of the teacher you would like to meet with.
You will then see the available time slots for the teacher you selected.
Select times that work best for your schedule.
Enter your email address if you would like and email reminder sent to you.
When you have finished, you can confirm your appointment details and print your conference schedule.

If you are having trouble signing up for an appointment, or none of the selected times will work for you--please feel free to call or email me and we can set up another time to meet.

Halloween Party

Our class Halloween Party will be on Wednesday October 31st from 12:45-1:45pm! If you would be willing to come help with a game or bring a treat or prize for games--Please contact our room mom with your information (or return the orange paper that was sent home with your child.)

Also-- the school-wide parade starts at 2pm on the 31st, you're more than welcome to come see our wonderful costumes as we parade around the school.

Explorer Report

Dear Parents:

In Social Studies--we are learning about Explorers.  Your child has been assigned an explorer to research. They will need to write a 1-page paper typed or neatly handwritten about their explorer, including: birth date, death date, why he was famous, and interesting facts about the explorer.  On Monday October 1^st your child’s written page and visual aid will be due.  We will have the students present their reports in class during the week.

For their oral presentation, your child will need to make a poster or visual aid.  The information on the poster needs to include: a picture, birth date, death date, why he was famous, and interesting facts about the explorer.   They will share their visual aid with the class starting on the 1st of October.

We had a phenomenal first day today!! What an amazing group of students I have to work with this year. Tonight I sent home a brief letter with my information on it-- in the coming days I will be sending home some additional paperwork for you to fill out and return with your student. This will include a Student Information Sheet & Volunteer sign-up. Please feel free to contact me in the meantime with any questions you might have. Your student also received a Field Trip permission slip today-- please read through that and return before Friday. **Also, I need to have the lunch count to our School Cafeteria ladies as soon as possible, please talk with your students about whether they will bring a home lunch or purchase one from school for the field trip. Hopefully your students had a great first day--it's hard getting back into the swing of things, but they were fabulous today!!

Welcome Back!


I am so excited to meet you and your children in the coming weeks! I am really looking forward to a fabulous 5th grade year! The following are some important things we will be discussing at Back to School Night, if you'd like to familiarize yourself beforehand that would be wonderful!

**Additionally, at the bottom of the blog you will find a calendar of the events/assignment for our classroom.

Homework Folders: Every student has a homework folder that should come home everyday, in addition to their planner. Inside are papers to take home and homework that needs to be completed. Please check their planners for all assignments for the week, upcoming projects and events. Please record reading minutes daily. Monday mornings, planners are checked for the total weekly reading minutes along with a parent signature.

PLEASE CHECK FOLDERS AND SIGN PLANNERS NIGHTLY. 

Independent Reading Minutes: Each student is required to read 150 minutes per week or 30 minutes a night, 5 nights a week. 4,000 minutes is required for the Fantastic Falcon!!!

WEEKLY HOMEWORK:  
Math: There will be a nightly Math Expressions Homework Worksheet (Monday-Thursday)

Spelling: You will receive a Spelling Parent Note on Mondays. Please read the entire paper and complete the assignments with your student, sign, and return no later than Wednesday of each week.

Reading: You will receive a Reading Comprehension Note on Monday. Please help your student read and answer the questions. Sign, and return by Friday of each week. The students will also receive a Comprehension Challenge worksheet on Tuesday. This assignment should be completed as morning work, and will be due on Thursdays.

Crosswords: Students are given one state crossword a week that will be due on Friday. This assignment should be completed as morning work. Students need to highlight or underline where they find the answer to each question to get full credit.  

Current Events: Students are assigned a day of the week and should bring their current event each week on that day. Please check to make sure they have summarized the article in their own words and included a 5th grade vocabulary word to share.

Falcon Friday / Missing Work: Student/Parents will need to check Skyward each week for a list of any missing assignments. Check with the main office for your user name and password. Students may find extra worksheets in the file bin in our classroom. It will be their responsibility to gather any missing assignments and turn them in by the end of school each Thursday. Those students who have all their assignments turned in will get to participate in a “Math Mat” activity on Friday mornings.

Upcoming Events!

These past couple of weeks we have been preparing for our CRT tests, which we started last week! Our next CRT test is for Science and will be this Thursday from 12:45-1:45pm. Please make sure your student gets adequate rest and eats a good breakfast for the testing day. Also, a quick reminder (especially if you haven't seen the invitation) the Maturation Program will be held tomorrow evening at 6:30pm. Our DARE Graduation will be this Friday @ 9:00am, please join us in the Gym to celebrate our students' achievements! **We are also in need of Kleenex & Hand Sanitizer! Thank you for all your continued donations and support!! They are very much appreciated!!
